Foundation Course

Designed to take you from the basics of hand plastering to a professional level, the foundation course is suitable for those with little or no experience. Lasting five days, the course has been designed to meet the stringent requirements of NVQ units VR02, VR03, VR65 and VR66.

It covers all of the following:

  • Health and Safety induction
  • Tools, equipment and understanding materials
  • Measuring, cutting and fixing plasterboard
  • Applying scrim and tape to plasterboard joints
  • Fixing and working with angle beads to corners and reveals
  • Applying backing coats
  • Finishing and setting techniques to plasterboard and backing coats
  • Further optional NVQ-compliant units

Intermediate Course

The intermediate course aims to help students improve their technique, speed of working and quality of finish. The course covers the remaining NVQ units VR67 and VR64, along with the optional units VR69, VR70 and VR71.

Taught across five days, it includes the following:

  • Applying bell beads, sand and cement scratch coats to block and brick walls to prepare them for a floating coat.
  • Applying floating coats and finishes
  • Applying all types of render
  • Setting out and laying floor screeds
  • Lining walls and reveals with plasterboard using the 'dot and dab' technique
  • Setting out beams and piers

Advanced Course

The advanced course gives you the time and confidence to practice your skills under supervision. It's the last phase of training before you begin your new career, and can be used as evidence in your NVQ assessment.

It includes:

  • Setting out and finishing archways
  • Setting out carved walls, bull noses and irregular and obtuse angles
  • Setting out and applying ashlar panels (optional)
  • Introduction to fibrous plastering including the running and fixing of moulded cornices (optional)
