This training was fantastic. It was not a classroom or a sanitised environment but an actual workshop training alongside skilled craftsmen.

Italian polished plaster course

Polished plaster, often called Venetian, Marble or Italian plaster, is a stunning decorative wall finish made from lime putty, marble grains and powders, waxes and colourants applied with a steel trowel. That's the easy bit – the skill is achieving a number of high-quality finishes ranging from the rustic pitted stone look to a coloured, high-shine finish.

The two day course will give you the skills you need to become an applicator and finisher of polished plaster. It covers:

  • Preparation and setting out
  • How to apply specialist finishes
  • Achieving the correct colour
  • Creating styles and special effects
  • Finishes with two or more colours
  • A variety of ways to finish edges
  • Use of waxes and polishes

It includes:

  • The use and mixing of heritage materials
  • Taking squeezes of existing sections and enrichments
  • Creating new moulds and laying-in enrichment
  • The correct method of pouring rubber moulds
  • Casting and fixing a new section to match existing work
  • Fixing laths to timber stud work
  • Applying lime putty mixes [to confirm]
  • Modelling enrichment in situ
  • Casting from moulds using other materials

Dry lining and studding

Dry lining is a popular method because it’s quick to install and doesn’t take long to dry, so dry liners are always in great demand and command exceptionally high rates of pay. Our dry lining course equips you with the skills you need to handle the installation of partition studding through to boarded walls and ceilings, and how to correctly joint them so they’re ready for the decorator. It includes:

  • optimising plasterboard
  • setting out walls and ceilings
  • erecting studding
  • constructing door openings
  • the method for fixing plasterboard
  • ‘dot and dab’ fixing
  • bonding to impervious substrates
  • fixing dry wall beads and angles
  • noggins and pattrasses
  • the method for taping and jointing
